Individual Counseling

Individual Counseling for Adolescents and Adults

For the past 25 years I’ve provided individual counseling to adolescents and adults for a variety of issues, including anxiety, stress, depression, achieving and maintaining sobriety.

My style is warm and compassionate but also direct and practical. Therapy is about making positive changes in important areas of your life, and I’m dedicated to helping guide and support you towards making those transformations.

Covid-19 has exacerbated the problems many people have with their mental health and relationship to substances.

Since the pandemic hit last March, I’ve helped a lot of people, but particularly young adults (20s and 30s), struggling with loneliness, isolation and substance abuse.

For those with anxiety or depression, I primarily use cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). CBT is an evidence-based form of psychotherapy that focuses on challenging one’s irrational thinking about themselves or others so that they can have different outcomes. In numerous studies it’s been proven to be highly effective in reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression.

In addition to CBT, I use mindfulness techniques and motivational interviewing to help clients. Motivational interviewing is a directive, client-centered counseling style for eliciting behavior change by helping clients explore and resolve ambivalence.

I work with clients where the primary focus is to reduce or eliminate their suicidality. For over a decade I’ve been using the Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality (CAMS), developed by Dr. David Jobes. I’ve found the CAMS to be very effective in giving clients relief from suicidal thoughts.
