Behavioral issues
The teenage years are a time of rapid change for an individual, which is full of opportunity and challenges. This time can be a difficult for the teen and the parents. There are a number of reasons for this tension. One reason is task of adolescence is to learn independence, but at a measured pace. For the parents it always seems too fast and for the teen to slow. It is a time of self-discovery for the teen, which is often accompanied by self-doubt and experimentation. Teenagers generally experience a lot of social pressure to fit in and to succeed at school. Many young people find it hard to cope with all these pressures and act out. I can help you navigate this phase of your life and your teen’s life.
Depression
Depression is a brain disorder that is often accompanied by symptoms of sadness, lack of energy, trouble sleeping and eating, and a general lack of motivation, to name a few symptoms. In child and adolescence instead of sadness, depression might manifest as anger and irritability, or a general feeling of discontentment. Untreated in its worst form it can lead to suicide or self-harm. Treatment options often include talk-therapy, exercise, and possibly medication.
Suicidality
Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S. and the second leading cause of death for individuals ages 10 to 34; according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Thoughts and expressions of suicide should always be taken seriously. I use the evidence-based practice of Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality (CAMS) developed by Dr. David Jobes. This is a systematic approach to treating suicidal thoughts and behaviors. If, you or a family member are suffering with suicidal thoughts call today. This condition can be treated.
ADHD
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has two types. One with just inattention and a difficulty concentrating and at times making decisions. The hyperactive type also includes restlessness and inability to stay still for long periods of time. Along with impulsivity it often affects judgement and some teens struggle with making good choices. Therapy helps them make better decisions as a teen mature. The individual also needs to learn to deal with impulsive thoughts so they do not act on them immediately. Therapy can help with decisions and impulsivity.
Anxiety
We all experience anxiety. You may experience anxiety when take an exam, speaking in front of a crowd, or on a first date. Anxiety becomes a problem, when it occurs, with no attributable cause or when it is depilating. Anxiety that hinders you from functioning in your daily life should be treated with psychotherapy. For example, a panic attack can stop you in your tracks. There are several evidence-based practices to treat anxiety we can do together.
