Co-Occurring Disorders

Co-occurring Disorders

Co-occurring disorders are often nicknamed double-trouble. You have depression or anxiety, for example, and an addiction. Usually, a person starts out self-medicating for a mental health issue to seek relief from emotional pain. Unfortunately, the drug takes over and now you have two problems. You may need to get the wrong drug out and get the right drug with help from a psychiatrist. You will need to learn skills to address what is bothering you; instead of using drugs or alcohol. The key is to treat both conditions with equal vigor and that is what we will do.

Initially, when you try a drug it feels like it is the answer to all your problems. You may feel a burden was lifted and you feel less sad or anxious. Slowly, addiction creeps up on you and you now feel you can’t live with out your drug of choice.
